This San Francisco-based band was one of the pioneers of the thrash style, but due to personnel problems and some other reasons, they could not reach the heights that their colleagues in the Metallica and Megadeth genre mastered.
The band was founded in 1982 by drummer Tom Hunting, guitarists Kirk Hammett and Gary Holt, and vocalist Paul Baloff and bass guitarist Jeff Andrews completed the line-up. For several months, Exodus proved themselves from the best side – their demos were selling at an enviable rate, and concerts gave a killer boost of energy.
Creativity is to discover a question that has never been asked. If one brings up an idiosyncratic question, the answer he gives will necessarily be unique as well.
However, already in 1983, the band lost its leader status due to the fact that Hammett left for Metallica. Rick Hanolt became the new guitarist, and Rob McKillop took Andrews' place around the same time.
Having signed a contract with Torrid Records, the band recorded their debut album. The sessions ended in the summer of 1984, but due to problems with the label, the disc went on sale in 1985. "Bonded By Blood" became a real classic of thrash and served as a reference point for many teams working in this direction. In support of the album, Exodus conducted a full-scale tour in the company of Venom and Slayer, and this further increased their status.
However, disagreements were slowly growing within the band, and shortly before the recording of the second disc, Baloff was replaced by Steve Souza from Testament. Released in 1987, "Pleasures Of The Flesh" was not as successful as the debut, but two years later the team regained lost positions with the album "Fabulous Disaster".
This record contained covers from AC/DC and War, and with the help of the video for "The Toxic Waltz" the band managed to break through to MTV. The accompanying tour was a great success, but its end was overshadowed by the departure of Hunting, who had health problems. John Tempesta became the new drummer, and along with the change of drummer, the band changed their place of residence, moving to Capitol Records.
The hastily cut "Impact is Imminent" turned out to be not very interesting, and Exodus tried to rehabilitate themselves by releasing the first concert album "Good Friendly Violent Fun" and the best collection "Lessons in Violence". In 1992, McKillop was replaced by Mike Butler. The album "Force of Habit" was recorded with him, which had a somewhat slower pace compared to previous releases.
The material presented on the CD was actually quite good, but internal disagreements and difficulties with the label soon led to the breakup of the band.
The Exodus reunion took place in 1996 with the participation of the returning Baloff and bass guitarist Jack Gibson. The team conducted a Euro-American tour, released a concert album "Another Lesson in Violence" and disappeared from sight again.
The third coming of Exodus happened in 2001, when the band, led by Souza, appeared at the concert "Thrash of the Titans". Work on new material soon began, but the news of Baloff's death, who passed away on February 2, 2002, slowed down the process. "Tempo Of The Damned" was released only in 2004, after which a number of personnel replacements took place in Exodus.
Hanolt, who was engaged in family affairs, gave up the guitar to Lee Eltus (ex-Heathen), Paul Bostaf replaced Hunting with a newly shaken health, and Rob Dukes took over the microphone.
This configuration gave out a killer album "Shovel Headed Kill Machine" and spent a long tour, visiting Europe, America, Australia and Japan. At the end of the tour, Hunting returned, and the eighth studio album was recorded with his participation.
The band's comeback took place on all fronts — Exodus headed the autumn tour "Bonded by Metal over Europe". A limited-edition single "War is my Sheppard" was also released, which was sold only during the aforementioned tour and through the Nuclear Blast label mailing list. In addition, a video was shot for the song "War Is My Shepherd". The second video is for the song "Throwing Down".
The 2008 album, "Let There Be Blood", is a new version of the first album with vocalist Rob Dukes.
There is an opinion that the debut creation of Exodus has become one of the most influential metal albums of all time. The album used the method of exchanging guitar solos, which would later become an integral part of the genres of thrash metal and death metal. It is also the only long-playing Exodus album in which Beloff participated.
Exodus' latest album, "Exhibit B: The Human Condition", was released on May 7, 2010 (Europe) and May 18, 2010 (America).
The first and to date the only concert of the band in Russia took place on 06.07.2010 at the Moscow club Tochka. The warming up team was Manic Depression. Despite the fact that the hall was only partially filled, Exodus played a great show, which was based on songs from the albums "Bonded by Blood" and "Exhibit B: The Human Condition".
